Sekonic L358 & Pocket Wizard Plus II remote triggering real world range test

Mardi, 31 ao没t 2010

Being able to remotely activate your camera’s shutter has always fascinated me. The applications are endless. This is one of the benefits of a DSLR system. Using the wired electronic shutter release cable, Canon timer remote TC-80N3, eliminates camera shake and offers some other cool features such as intervalemeter (Time lapse) shooting and long exposure capability. You’re still tethered to the camera of course. Also testing a couple of remote shutter triggering methods wirelessly from a distance. Using the Sekonic L-358 and the Sekonic Radio Triggering Module RT-32 installed as well as the Pocket Wizard Plus II units themselves. Using the PocketWizard CM-N3-P Pre-Trigger Motor Cord for Canon to trigger the Canon 30D. The 580EXII flash was triggered in relay mode where the channel is set one higher than the one assigned to the camera. Being able to take a light reading on one channel then switch to another channel to trigger the whole setup from the Sekonic L-358 is awesome! Frees me from having to get another Pocket Wizard unit. In my unscientific real world test indicated the range at around 50 feet for the Sekonic L358 and about 150 feet using the Pocket Wizard Plus II to trigger the setup. As other users have found, the 1000+ range advertised is very optimistic at best. Canon 580 EX II flash units have been known to emit some interference when used with the Pocket Wizards. I haven’t tried the shielding material, but have some on hand and may duplicate the test to see

Lexar Professional Compact Flash Card Review

Lundi, 30 ao没t 2010

Today we are going take a look at the new Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash Memory Card. This card has been designed with the digital SLR camera user in mind and the heavy speed requirements associated with such products.

Digital SLR cameras are not only increasing in pixels but also in processor speed and so there is a need to store the information from the sensor rapidly and reliably. It is essential that the storage medium keeps pace with the processing power of the latest SLR cameras and so Lexar have come up with the latest Compact Flash memory card, the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x.

The standard write speed of most cards was about 1-2mb per second, this as increased through 4x, 8x etc to a point now where 133x write speeds have become common place and many professional photographers have memory cards of this speed and higher in their bags.

The Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash memory card was built to provide ultimate high-speed performance with an emphasis on reliability for the professional and advanced enthusiast photographer. The card work in unison with a UDMA enabled reader to supply dramatically increases card read and write transfer rates.

The card has also been design with a certain amount of future proofing as a lot of the latest SLR professional cameras come with the next generation of high-resolution UDMA technology. The Lexar Professional UDMA CF card is also available in smaller sizes including 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities.

So how much better can it be to use one of these card, what kind of advantage does it give? Well the simple answer is that speed equals time. The memory cards can write information far quicker saving time which means no delay in being ready to catch the next great shot. We tested this on a standard dSLR camera from Cannon using a 1gb memory card. We held the shutter for 10 seconds and managed to record just 8 frames. Removing the card only and replacing it with the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash memory card saw an increase in frames from 8 to 16. So we doubled the frame rate just by replacing the memory card. Now that’s what I call an easy upgrade path.

The Lexar Memory Card as an official read/write speed based at a minimum write speed capability of around 300x (45MB/sec) quiet amazing when you think about it. The memory card also includes some useful little Extras. The Lexar Professional UDMA 300x card includes Lexar’s own Image Rescue(TM) 3 software. This is a very useful bit of software and should help you recover any deleted images or files without too much trouble and this includes corrupted data retrieval. The Image Rescue(TM) 3 software can also make sure that all the images you do not require anymore can be removed correctly and the memory card reformat securely to ensure no one can access your used data.

The read speeds on the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x card are very fast and this means that you will spend less time downloading the data to your computer or checking shots etc. although. Another good point is that the memory card comes with a limited lifetime warranty and a dedicated customer support line that’s free to customers. A useful thing when you consider the cost and value of such a memory card.

Verdict we where very impress with the speed of this memory card and if you are in the situation where time is money then I would recommend this card highly. The true advantages of having such read and write speed buffer clearing ability is a very useful point shooting fast moving action shots such as sports or wildlife.

So in summary, the things we liked about the Lexar Professional UDMA 300x Compact Flash memory card:

o High-speed UDMA performance and reliability, especially when used with an appropriate UDMA reader

o Dramatically improves the transfer speeds of data from your card to any other storage device.

o Includes the very useful and easy to use Image Rescue(TM) 3 software.

o And finally, it comes with a Limited lifetime warranty

The negative points are:

o This card is only for the deep of pocket and may be overkill for general photographic requirements.

o That said if you can afford it you will not be disappointed.

New Canon EOS Rebel T2i Digital SLR Camera Review

Vendredi, 20 ao没t 2010

Canon has added to the entry-level segment, the new EOS Rebel T2i. Born with the popularity of the Canon EOS Rebel T1i, the EOS Rebel T2i is designed to offer more choice to the video function.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i – Features:

There are several changes from the Rebel T1i. In particular, the ISO sensitivity reaches up to ISO 6400, although it is still possible to expand to 12800 ISO. The management of the sensitivity function AutoISO, can not use very high ISO in difficult conditions, but to set an upper limit. Features not found on previous models offering a totally entrusted to the control machine.

The screen has a higher resolution, it passes from 307,000 to 1,040,000 pixels, a significant difference expect to deepen.

The new screen resolution should help with new video features of the Canon EOS Rebel T2i. Available video recording Full HD 1080p with manual control and frame rate selectable. You can choose between 30, 25 and 24 fps in full HD quality, while 60 or 50 fps with reduced quality to 720p. Interesting is the Movie Crop reduces the resolution to 640 脳 480 to obtain a magnification of 7 times the lens focal length.

The measurement system to 63 zones iFCL dual-layer corresponds to that of the Canon EOS 7D, just one of the innovative features that accompanied this product. This measurement system has new algorithms for determining an optimal exposure.

The EOS Rebel T2i has an exposure compensation of +/- 5EV 1/3 or 1/2 stop. Is not a new feature to other brands like Nikon and Olympus.

Added compatibility with the Eye-Fi memory. Probably the Eye-Fi technology will be implemented in the service iMAGE GATEWAY, offering a convenient service that automatically sends the detection of a hotspot Wi-Fi on your space. Canon EOS Rebel T2i supports memory cards SDXC that have a theoretical maximum size of 2TB.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i – Considerations:

It ‘a new SLR from excellent features. It will certainly be a good product that will continue the success of this segment Canon. The functions and features allow you to judge as of now, the only concern of great importance is the quality of the sensor, an APS-C loaded with 18 megapixel would seem a bit excessive, then we must take a look at the shots at high ISO.

Will go on sale from March at a price of $799.99 body only and $899.99 in one body with Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens kit.

The price is high, but of course, is to launch. Expect some evidence « empirical » to give an overall assessment on the new Canon T2i.

Digital Camera Flash Units

Mercredi, 18 ao没t 2010

Digital cameras flash units come in many shapes and sizes. Low end digital cameras include low energy built in flash units. High end digital SLR cameras can support sophisticated external flash units which can provide superior lighting in difficult scenarios. Here are some basic facts about flash units both built in and external.

Flash units came a long way since their early days. Back then flash units were using powder that was lit by electrical current and literally « blew up » to produce the light energy. Using these flash units was a risky business. It was also difficult as the flash units were not automatically synchronized to the camera‘s shutter. The photographer had to make sure that the flash goes off at the exact right time synchronized with the shooting of the photo.

Nowadays flash units are sophisticated technology devices. They use an electronic flash tube that is automatically synchronized to the camera. The photographer merely needs to do nothing. New digital cameras can decide on their own if the flash is needed, they can set its intensity and other parameters and they can fire the flash at the exact right time when the shutter is opened. All this is done automatically in the background. Digital camera also provide the user with the ability to manually control the flash, force it to either fire or not to fire, set its intensity and more.

Flash units are divided into two categories: Internal built-in flash units or external flash units. Internal flash units are built into the camera. Almost all digital cameras include such a unit and allow the user some control over it through the camera‘s menus and buttons. External flash units are attached to the camera‘s body through a dedicated slide-in slot or by using an electrical cable. Not all digital cameras support external flash units. Usually the lower end pocket cameras do not allow external flash units while all high end digital SLR cameras do allow such external flash units. External flash units can vary a lot. They can have different light energy levels that they can emit and different mechanical characteristics. Some external flash units also include smart sensors to measure ambient light, distance and other optical parameters in order to optimize the flash effect.

Digital cameras can use their flash units in automatic or in manual mode. In automatic mode the camera measures ambient light and fires the flash when not enough ambient light is available. Sometimes the camera will make the wrong decision as to using the flash and will either fire or not fire the flash when the opposite was needed. Setting the flash intensity is important too. If the flash unit fires too much light energy on objects that are too close to the camera the digital photo will be washed out. On the other hand if the flash unit fires a small amount of light energy on an object that is farther away from the digital camera the digital photo will be a too dark.

Flash units have limitations too. They can not light any scene and any object at any distance from the camera. It is important to know your flash unit limitations. For example check what the maximum light energy that it can emit is and what the farthest that an object can be effectively lit from. This is also known as the effective flash range. If the object is out of the effective flash range it is actually better to turn off the flash altogether and use a tripod with a longer exposure. Sometimes it is useful to use the flash even if there is enough ambient light. In such cases you can manually force the camera to fire the flash. This is also known as fill-in flash as it is usually used to fill-in shadowed areas on objects in the digital photo.

Precision Design DSLR300 Universal High Power Auto Flash with Zoom/Bounce/Swivel Head for Digital SLR Cameras

Precision Design DSLR300 Universal High Power Auto Flash with Zoom/Bounce/Swivel Head for Digital SLR Cameras Better than the built in flash, but not professional quality – J. Norton –
this flash works great if you are simply a photography enthusiast or do it as a hobby, but I would not recommend it for professional work. Does not have TTL ( doesn’t « talk » to your camera and adjust accordingly to camera settings ) and goes through batteries like crazy. Burned through 16 AA’s shooting one wedding. Price is great but as they say, you get what you pay for.
Precision Design: This universal high-power flash unit for digital SLR cameras is the perfect accessory for any photographer looking for reduced red-eye, evenly lit subjects, or more power for telephoto shooting. This flash can be effective at ranges of over 50 feet, reduces shadows, and adds depth to your pictures thanks to the adjustable head, which zooms, swivels and tilts for added versatility.
