Taking pictures with your digital camera is about as easy as picking up your camera and snapping off a shot. But, to capture beautiful quality pictures, it requires slightly more effort. Taking quality pictures has never been easier, now that digital cameras have many features like autofocus and auto-flash. Still, here are some digital SLR tips to help supercharge your experience with digital photography.

1. Get closer to your subject. Don’t be shy; get in there. Most beginner photographers will make the mistake of not getting close enough to take a decent shot. They’ll instead shoot from far away, leaving too much distance between them and the subject matter of their shot. By getting closer, you’re able to fill up more of the frame, which is what you should aim to do. Remember, that you can always edit a shot later to reshape or trim a great shot. But, you’re limited if you take a shot far away since you can’t blow it up and expect the image to be focused.

2. This might be simple and might even seem redundant, but make sure to focus your shot on only one subject matter per photo. Decide beforehand what that will be and take a shot. You can choose a background that has action, so long as the key person or object you’re wanting to portray remains focused.

3. Also, make sure that in your photos the background is simple, and not too « busy ». Otherwise, your background will be a distraction to the viewer and you’ll lose the central idea of the image. Anything that takes away from the focus of your shot can easily ruin your photo’s appeal, so be very aware of that.

4. Next, you’ll want to be sure that the subject you’re taking a shot of is in the middle of the frame. What I follow for this is the rule of thirds. Think of this like the game tic tac toe, but imagine every image you take has nine boxes, three by three. The focus point of your photos should be where the tic tac toe lines cross. That’s a rule I follow and I’m consistently impressed at how much that technique alone can help.

5. And finally, we’ve come to the most important element; lighting. Since it’s the hardest to control, take every effort to stage everything else. If you are planning to take shots during the day, be sure to use a polarized filter at a 90 degree angle to the sun. You’ll want to open up your lens about 1 to 1.5 stops to adjust for the lack of light coming through the filter.

If you’re one of those nature lovers, it’s good to know that the best time to take night shots is right after the sun is setting. Consider using a polarized lens during a sunset, since it will limit the amount of light that’s being taken in. It’s usually best to have the sun at your back when taking a shot. Be aware of your shadows as well your subject’s shadows.

6. Always remember to use your camera‘s highest-resolution setting, since you’ll be way better off to shrink a photo later, than to attempt to resize it bigger later.

These are just a few basic tips and strategies you can follow that will help to improve the quality of your photos. Photography is a skill that can be improved upon with practice. Get out there and start taking shots!

I am new to DSLR photography and I bought this book to learn about the camera’s settings and how to take a good photograph. I am on chapter 5 and beyond lost. This book was a big waste of money. Do not buy this book unless you grasp technical details easily or are experienced in photography.

The book is better than it sounds. I have been taking pictures for years but didnt really utilize all the basic features. Many of the principles apply to Digital slr’s as well. It is a quick read and sheds some light on bracketing for optimal pictures, better aperture settings for different effects, and more.

Digital imaging technology has improved dramatically over the past few years. Previously, all serious photographers agreed that Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLRs) could not produce the same quality and precision as conventional Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras on a dollar-for-dollar basis. ie. a $1,000 SLR camera would be far superior to a $1,000 DSLR camera.

Recently, the technology has evolved to such an extent that Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras are a great alternative for serious amateurs or professionals. You actually now get more ‘bang for your buck’ in that optically the lenses are equivalent and as there are less moving parts in digital cameras, you are sure to get fewer problems.

DSLR cameras have a different imaging mechanism. Whilst the viewfinder is similar to traditional cameras (optical viewfinder with shuttered mirror), exposure is completely different. Standard SLR cameras rely on mechanical or electric shutters which only allow light in during the exposure cycle, DSLR cameras use a light-sensitive sensor to capture the image. Light actually comes in all the time, but the sensor only becomes ‘active’ during the exposure cycle.

Most digital cameras have a LCD on the back of the camera to activate of change the camera‘s settings or features. You can now also use the LCD to compose the shots. Non digital cameras don’t have a LCD and you will need to use the optical viewfinder to compose the photograph.

* Do I really need digital technology? The key benefit of digital technology is the ability to immediately see your photo. This is important if you’re are a freelance news photographer, but not that relevant if you specialize in still-life shots in a studio setting

* Do I really need interchangeable lenses. If not, consider a high quality non-reflex digital camera. These cameras offer all the digital advantages but come without the high price tag.

Brauchbar, aber nur für kleinere Touren – Ein Kunde –
Mein Fazit vorweg: Wer sich diesen kleineren Fotorucksack zulegen möchte, sollte vorher genau abwägen, wo und wann er ihn überhaupt einsetzen möchte. Ich bereue den Kauf zwar nicht, muss aber sagen, dass ich bei diversen Ausflügen in letzter Zeit jeweils anderen Fototaschen den Vorzug gab. Deshalb von mir nur 3 Sterne.

Hintergrund: Ich habe eine Nikon D5000 mit dem Kit-Objektiv 18-55mm sowie einem Tele 70-200mm. Hinzu kommen noch Gegenlichtblenden, Fernauslöser, Ersatz-Akku sowie Speicherkarten und vielleicht noch ein kleines Mini-Stativ. All dies lässt sich in der Tat gut und sicher im Slingshot 100 verstauen, so dass man beruhigt damit herumlaufen kann.

Der Slingshot 100 ist klein, handlich, robust, gut verarbeitet und lässt sich bequem auf dem Rücken tragen. Dank des Schlaufen-Designs hat man schnellen Zugriff auf die Kamera. Lobenswert ist auch die (allerdings gut versteckte) herausziehbare Regenhülle, die den gesamten Rucksack abdeckt und auch einem Platzregen standhalten soll. Die teure Ausrüstung ist also gut aufgehoben.

Soweit die positiven Punkte. Schwieriger wird es bei der praktischen Anwendung. Der Slingshot 100 ist zwar größer als eine Fototasche, aber wiederum zu klein, um als brauchbarer Fotorucksack für längere Touren dienen zu können. Denn, außer der Kameraausrüstung lässt sich wenig mehr in dem Rucksack verstauen. Reiseführer, Notizbuch, Landkarte, kleine Kompaktkamera, Trinkflasche, Regenjacke – für all dies ist kein Platz mehr, und darüber sollte man sich vorher im Klaren sein.

Der Slingshot 100 eignet sich allenfalls für wirklich kleine Touren, bei denen man z. B. das Auto auf dem Parkplatz zurücklässt, um sich in Ruhe am Ort umsehen zu können, man aber gerne mehr mitnehmen möchte/muss, als nur die Kamera. Ideal deshalb für Fotojournalisten, die einen Termin wahrnehmen. Für längere Wanderungen und Tagesausflüge jedoch nehme ich lieber gleich den größeren Rucksack, in dem genug Platz ist für Wasserflasche, Regenjacke etc. sowie das restliche Kamerazubehör. Die Kamera kommt wieder in die kleine Fototasche zum Umhängen. Nur fragt man sich da, wozu man sich den Slingshot gekauft hat.

The first question I have for you, is whether you want a small, compact « point-and-shoot » type of camera, essentially one that fits in a pants-pocket, if so, then I would recommend the Nikon Coolpix S-560. Fantastic features, great price ($150-$200). Somewhere like BEST BUY probably the best place to pick one up.

If, on the other hand, you want something more professional, high-end, known as an « SLR » camera, looks more like a traditional camera where you can swap different lenses for different purposes of photography, then you need to first need to decide how much you want to spend for a great SLR-camera and a lens or two.

I personally really wanted an SLR, because I had « maxed out » on the kinds of photos I can take with a « point-and-shoot », and by accounts of some « photo pros », I was doing fantastic work with just a « point-and-shoot ». So I wanted to take things to the next level and see what kinds of things I could do with an SLR-camera.

I set my max. price point at about $1200 (camera + lenses, mem. card, etc). After some lengthy research I determined the choice was going to be between Nikon and Canon. With my price point as a limiting factor, the clear 2 choices came down to the Nikon D5000 and the Canon Eos Rebel T1-i.

After having narrowed it down to these, I had to try and figure out which of the two was the « better » choice. This is where it got hard. I did a bunch more research but essentially ended at an impasse, because there were essentially equal amounts of people (lots of them!) who each said theirs was better than the other. The Nikon-camp was heavily entrenched and wishlessly happy, just as was the Canon-camp.

So I eventually headed to BEST BUY and spoke to a very knowledgeable photo-guy who really knows both of these cameras.

All things being equal, he said either camera is a pleasure to use and makes its owner very happy. He said the Nikon actually outperforms the Canon in low-light (e.g. night-time) situations, and also did better in terms of battery life under heavy use. The Canon was slightly better than the Nikon in terms of highest resolution and it full-motion HD video capabilities. (I wasn’t even considering buying an SLR-camera to double as a vid-recorder.)

So ultimately, I went with the Nikon D5000. Very happy so far!
