Customer Reviews:
Great deal, and GPS![]()
There are a lot or reviews for the Garmin 765T, but this is the first for the unit, bundled with the lifetime map update.
First, this is a great deal, because for twenty-five dollars extra, amazon is giving you free lifetime map updates. This is normally a hundred + dollar option.
Unit is great. Fast satellite locate, great accuracy. Lane assist is great option that it comes with. I am not sure why, but on a 3 hour drive from WA to ID, I never saw traffic information once. Maybe that only works in BIG cities. I will check in Seattle or Portland.
The speaker phone works much better than expected. Doing 70MPH, the caller said it had only a minor sound like a window was cracked open (I had them rolled up). They said that they could still hear me clearly. I like how the caller ID and address book are displayed on the Garmin. Also, phone battery status.
I did go to Garmin’s website and it said both a map update and a software update were needed. The software update took 5 minutes. The map update was long! Over 3 hours to download 2 GB (not MB, but GB!) and then transfer it into the unit. I think even with the quickest internet, this is still a 2 hour process.
My GPS is fully updated now! So I hit the road to Idaho. Very accurate. Lot’s of voices and icons to choose from. You can download more, for free, from Garmin.
I really like that you can enter coordinates, a feature my older Magellan did not have.
I only have one critical comment, and it is minor. On the display, it shows the speed limit, and your speed. It also gives you the choice of seeing your distance to destination OR elevation, OR estimated arrival time, OR time to destination, or …
It would be nice if you could select an option to automatically scroll through these instead of having to manually selecting one. I like to know both elevation, and distance to the destination simultaneously. Elevation is important to me so that I know to keep an eye out for ice or snow.
Overall, I love it though. I like the eco mode, which assist you in optimizing gas mileage.
Good GPS but heavy, speaker SUCKS and not configurable enough![]()
Got this one to replace my aging 370. On the whole I like the 765 (and the lifetime map updates!) though was hoping that 3 years and a higher end model would result in a far better GPS. It is more accurate, has better graphics and visibility even in strong daylight (unlike 370), faster and shows both turn lanes and traffic conditions, which I like.
On the con side, it took forever to update the map, the 765 is a lot more heavy than the 370 (no more keeping it in my purse) and the speaker is FAR worse. The voice sounds choppy and I had a hard time understanding what a caller was saying on an incoming call. The 370 voice quality was much better. I don’t know why a newer higher end model should have such poor sound.
The navigation options should have improved. I was hoping the 765 will have overcome the 370 tendency to select obscure highways rather than freeways, and/or allow the option of preferring freeways, but that seems to still be a problem. Having the 370 navigate me through high Sierra mountain roads during winter, rather than go through the freeways, is downright crazy, and potentially dangerous. I have not driven to Tahoe with the 765 yet, but I hope it will be better in that respect.
Inserting an address also hasn’t improved much (except for switching to QWERTY keyboard). The device should remember cities inserted and offer them earlier than new ones (e.g. if I used Santa Clara, I w
So on the whole a decent GPS and certainly does the job. Lifetime maps and traffic are great. But the poor quality of the speaker and lack of configurable navigational choices lowers the score heavily.
Another piece of junk![]()
This unit has excellent graphics and the menu is very intuitive, but that’s where it ends. When you upload google maps routes, it only saves the destination; not the route you planned. When trying to set-up custom routes, this thing will route you around every country road in the USA to get to your destination. When you try the optimize feature for the route, not matter which optimize feature you select, it always says this is the best route and will not let you adjust it. If your going to the grocery store at the end of your street, then this is your machine. Otherwise, I would look somewhere else. Also, the disclamer on the lifetime maps is it’s good for the life of the machine or the current map provider; whichever happens first.

Avoid it at all costs !!!! HP’s tech support has slowly deteriorated through the years but the outsourced Costa Rican based business division, which covers this scanner is a totally unprofessional operation. Not only is the software defective (version 1) but you cannot communicate with them or get them to understand the meaning of customer service. Even if I wanted to I don’t have the time to deal with HP’s continuing deterioration of product and software quality. I have owned many HP products in the past and they are more and more problematic. If you want a company to stand behind a product it is not HP. Save your time and money and buy another brand. I have had 2 weeks of my time wasted by HP. Update…. 3 months later, HP replaced the product with the N6350 after another division intervened. The N6310 started to fail calibration (hardware failure) on startup only 8 weeks after receiving it, keep in mind this is in addition to their software not working. The N6350 arrived with a scratched glass scanbed with specks under it which cannot be removed and cleaned. HP’s quality continues to deteriorate and the Costan Rican (HP Business Products) Support Division which oversees all scanners is the worst. I am stuck with the HP product. A friend recently got an Epson all in one which works beautifully and installed flawlessly. Lexmark/Epson all have better products at this point. Try to avoid HP scanners….unless you want to waste a lot of time dealing with a customer division that does not care about their customers. Features
Customer Reviews: Easy wireless set up and great quality prints First a bit about printing technologies: Inkjets are cheaper to purchase, but the cost of ink cartridges is staggering over time. The HL-3070CW comes with a set of « starter » toner cartridges, rated for 1,000 pages each. Compare that to an inkjet, where ratings of 150 – 200 pages from a full set of carts are common. (Our Epson CX5800F is lucky to get 75 pages out of a set of cartridges, given the amount of ink we waste on clogged print heads.) The Brother toner cartridges cost more to replace, but you’ll be replacing them much less often. The replacement black toner cartridge is rated for 2,200 pages, and the replacement color cartridges are rated at 1,400 pages each. The printer’s drum units are also user-replaceable, and are rated for 15,000 sheets. By my calculations, assuming that we get half of the rated pages from the toner cartridges, we’ll have made up the cost difference between these technologies in less than a year. The Brother will be significantly cheaper to run over time, without the frustration of clogged printheads. I bought the Brother HL-3070CW shortly after it was released. This was a bit of a leap of faith, given that there were no reviews available at the time. It took about 20 minutes to unbox the printer, set it up, and connect it to our (WPA-PSK secured) wireless network. It was a painless process from start to finish. The toner cartridges slot into the top of the printer easily, and the paper tray (250 sheets) slides in the bottom. The LCD screen on the printer is very basic, but it’s easy to read, it includes a back light, and it does its job well. The menu system is very simple (one item at a time, scroll with the up and down keys), but the choices are easy to understand and the menu works exactly as expected. I’ve never had to read the operating manual that came with the printer. (Installation documentation is supplied on paper, but the operating manual is a pdf file on the included disc.) Print quality has been excellent from the start. Characters are well-formed and easy to read, and graphic quality is very high with solid, vivid colors. Although not true photo quality, images are perfectly suitable for business purposes (brochures, presentations, etc.). I’ve used paper from 20 to 32 pounds without incident with this printer. I have not had any paper jams, and the printer always picks up just one sheet of paper. The output tray on the top is rated to hold 100 sheets, and it looks like it could do that easily. The printer will handle legal sized sheets, although so far all of my printing has been on letter sized paper. There’s a manual feed slot for thicker media and envelopes, but I’ve not had a reason to try it yet. The printer uses 10 watts while asleep, and wakes from sleep very quickly. It takes less than 20 seconds for the first page to print if the printer’s asleep when the document is sent. I’ve set my printer to go to sleep quickly, and have experienced no problems at all with it waking when documents are sent to it. The printer has also recovered gracefully from a power outage, including reconnecting to our wireless network automatically. It makes some noise when it feeds paper, but the noise level isn’t objectionable. One other interesting feature: The printer includes a USB port that can be used with PictBridge cameras, or that can be used to print some document types (e.g., pdf, jpeg) directly from a thumb drive. The Brother HL-3070CW is easy to set up, it uses little energy in standby mode, it feeds paper reliably, its consumable costs are reasonable, and it produces excellent quality output. I’m not sure what else one could ask for from a printer. I’m very happy with this unit, and have recommended it to others who have also had good experiences with it. Great printer, and very cheap for networked color LED (laser) printer Toner cartridges are about $60 each. The starter cartridges are supposed to last 1000 pages but I’ve only had it a month so we’ll see how that goes. You get (essentially) laser quality output but for $350, color, USB, Ethernet and wireless interfaces built in – so it’s hard to beat. No problems at all to date, but as I say it’s still new. Colors are very good, but if you’re looking to print photos it’s not going to look as good as a photo printer. Great for color images and charts/graphs in documents, though, and better color quality than my $99 Epson ink jet (non photo printer). Setup on the USB and plug-in Ethernet network connection is quite easy, there’s a built in web interface in the printer that you login to. Had to download a driver from the Brother website but that was easy to do. Setting up the wireless interface looks like it would take 30 minutes or so, but the plug-in Ethernet setup only took ten minutes plus another ten to download the driver for my computer. Hardware setup (unpacking really, and inserting the four toner cartridges) was about 15 minutes.
