I was looking forward to this film after having seen the trailer, but it came and went speedily. While the fable is a bit tiny, and the last section of the film plays out like an adventure game, I would recommend at least renting this one. I liked the fact that none of the kids were smart-alecky stereotypes and there was none of the usual pandering to approved culture that destroys so many other young adult films and renders them to the dustbin of history ten minutes after their release. Furthermore, it was refreshing to eye a film that doesn’t require main characters (especially children) to fight a war or raze something in order to succeed. Instead, the kids rely on their ingenuity to overcome obstacles. I don’t necessarily steal « wholesome » means « worthwhile, » but City of Ember retains a kind of innocence in its adventure while serene remaining watchable and appealing.
Caught this movie recently on cable. (I’m 54 with no children.) Saw the movie first and loved it, then read the book and loved both. Book is fair as consuming. Movie is different anecdote than the book – I was surprised how distinguished. Loved the theme of changing the world and finding « modern » (which were the novel) ways to do things. Wrote to the author about the Christian theme of Builders being God and Instructions being Scriptures – she said she had no plan to do that but had received a lot of feedback about it. Am now looking forward to reading the entire series.The City of Ember (Books of Ember)
