Amusing legend of a nerdy high school student Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey) who discovers that becoming well-liked isn’t the greatest thing in the world. After she accidentally ruins her mother’s suede dress with some wine, Cyndi, the most approved girl at school (played wonderfully by Amanda Petersen) will do anything to replace it before her mother gets benefit from her scoot.
Enter Ronald. After seeing her desperate attempt to replace the dress at the mall, Ronald makes a deal with Amanda. He’ll consume the money that he has earned all summer by mowing lawns to remove a unique dress, in return for Amanda’s abet in turning him to Mr. popularity.
Along the design, Ronnie learns lessons about the honest value of having accurate friends, and towards the kill of the movie Ronald discovers that he is unruffled himself.

This film, which is no longer produced by Touchstone Video (a division of the Disney Corporation) features many couple of stars before they hit it sizable. Gerardo, the Latin-singing star who scored a one-hit wonder with « Rico Suave, » plays one of the football jocks in the film. However, the valid scene-stealer in this film is Seth Green (« Austin Powers »; « Buffy the Vampire Slayer » « Can’t Hardly Wait ») who plays Ronald’s annoying, yet hysterical microscopic brother, Chuckie. By taking a ogle at Seth in this past role you can understand why he is such a sizable star today. He is always a flow when it comes to comedic performances.
I loved this film for many reasons, but I mediate the most memorable scene in this film probably has to be Ronald learning an African dance he saw on television (he belief he was watching « American Bandstand ») . After learning it, Ronald performs it at the gigantic dance, not gleaming that it would become a gargantuan hit.
This film ranks among the 10 best teenage comedies produced in the 1980′s. Let’s only hope that it will be re-released on video and DVD in the advance future.
Yes this movie covered ground that was covered a million times it seems in the 80s teen genre. Nerdy guy wants approved girl, nerdy guy with attend from everything from divine intervention(Beautiful Kid) to flatout pay her. Can’t purchase me worship would be in the latter category. The movie is one of the only ones to cast a « nerdy » looking guy to the role of the heartsick geek. Patrick Dempsey fits this role to a T. Amanda Peterson(fairly unknown, but colossal job) is substantial as the unattainable high school goddess. The supporting cast were critical for their sheer obnoxiousness. It is hard to like any of them. For those who liked Geraldo(the singer) watch for him as one of these.

The basic synopsis of the movie is Ronald(nerd) wants Cindy(Head cheerleader) . But unlike most movies in the genre, Ronald is not motivated by affection for Cindy. He seems most motivated by that ever illusive « popularity ». The entrepaneur nerd raises 1000 dollars for a summer of lawn mowing, and offers the money to Cindy in exchange for the appearance of them « going out ». Of course as with most movies he loses his archaic friends, gains the newer ones, and becomes instant « most desired on campus » when he convinces Cindy to steal the job. Of course in the extinguish, Cindy and ronald sight the error of their ways and hook up.
Although this movie is typical of its genre, it stands out for its safe natured tone. Yes there is the usual geek harrassment, but the movie uses very cramped vulger language etc. Normally this would not be a safe thing to me, but the movie is impartial too genuine to not like. The characters are all one dimensional.. but somehow they fit. There is the annoying kid brother(played by a young Seth Green), the clueless parents, and of course the superficial classmates. But these characters play their sterotypical roles so well… that they actually are very challenging.
The movie is hard to score, but its definatley worth a rent at the video store. You won’t accumulate that witty, beyond their years intellect that oozes from lots of recent teen comedies, but you will come by a frigid fable that will develop ya root for Dempsey and Peterson in the kill and wanting something poor to happen to the rest. Next time you have rented all the recent releases at Blockbuster… occupy this one up.
